I wanted to run down a list of some little-known, but pretty important must-haves that will get you through recovery following different cosmetic procedures.

Most of these are personal recommendations, things that truly saved me that were either advised by my surgeon and surgical coordinator, or items I learned were a necessity through my own trial and error!

First, you’ll typically be provided with a list of the usuals from your doctor or surgery center:

• Hibiclens, or an antibacterial soap, to use pre-op

• Colace, softeners… something to ensure the systems continue working and you don’t end up with any issues associated with prescribed narcotics and antibiotics, like constipation.

• Soft, light, easy-to-remove clothing to wear at home and to any post-op appointments. Usually, anything front-buttoned and loose is best.

• Medical supplies: Q-tips, cold compresses, one-time use ice packs, dressings, and medical-grade tape.

Depending on your surgery, you may be told a recliner is necessary (for a tummy tuck, 100% yes), and a walker could also be incredibly helpful to navigate around when you need to get moving.

That’s the standard list — and you absolutely need it! — but it’s not the full picture. Of course, it goes without saying, always follow your own doctor’s advice, but if you tend to prefer to be (over) prepared like me, or run into a jam at 2 a.m., here are some of my faves…

Infected stitch or small wound? Has every other remedy failed? MediHoney saved the day for me… and it’s exactly as it sounds: medical-grade, sterile honey. Do not put stress on your scar or the hard work you just paid good money for, but you must ensure you get a good amount of sleep. That will aid in healing your body more than anything else.

This may sound silly, but this bed ladder pull-up device was a massive help when I was solo or didn’t quite need to pester another person to help me out of bed anymore.

It attaches easily to the bottom of the bedframe (so have it ready to use long before it’s needed!)

Personally, I’ve never seen much change with topical solutions, so this is my favorite scar tape! These silicone sheets are meant to improve the appearance of scars and are available in nude or clear. I use nude since it seems to blend in best. (Like many other things, I truly hope they offer options to accommodate all skin tones!)

I’ve gone through quite a few brands; I’ve even been in an embarrassing situation where I was at a formal event and my tape was literally falling off and hanging from my arms for much of the night. Not so fun.

This brand stays put!

Don’t rush into using this tape until your surgeon approves. I don’t care what some TikTok or Instagram reel told you, you could worsen your scar by causing infection on a wound that has not yet healed!

Arnicare Bruise Gel includes the homeopathic Arnica Montana plant, and reduces swelling and discoloration that comes with bruising post surgery, lipo, or injury.

I love the gel because it’s light, fragrance-free, and absorbs easily.

This started to really help me in the evenings when I couldn’t get comfortable from the soreness.

Some Odds and Ends…

Juven comes highly recommended by many in the medical field. It’s a flavor packet containing amino acids, collagen peptides, vitamins, and zinc that you add to water, intending to support wound healing.

I personally used it for my previous surgery, and I was told I recovered well. My scars did appear to heal well and looked good.

Was it due to this? I can’t say for sure. I certainly wasn’t having it twice a day, and since it was pricy, I didn’t purchase more.

Diet, as always, does matter. Prioritize protein from real sources as well as fiber.

You’re going to be bored.

There’s only so much Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services to mindlessly sit through.

I actually used a different lap table that I had purchased at a craft store, and it didn’t quite hold up. This portable desk was a much better find! Sturdy for anything from eating to laptop browsing, and enough space for crafting if you need to keep your hands and mind busy. The legs fold up for easy and convenient storage.

And while we heal, we still do our best to keep up on our skincare routines, don’t we?

I feel the easiest (and most relaxing!) way to do that is with Red Light Therapy. The added benefit is that it can promote collagen and circulation, improving the appearance of a scar, as well as reducing inflammation.

Be sure not to start this therapy too soon; scars must be healed first.

I’d love for everyone to experience the least amount of discomfort possible and be able to focus only on getting well and looking forward to the bodily changes they’ll see in the coming months.

First off, disclaimer: I’m not an injector. I have zero to gain from you going to your local med-spa, plastic surgeon, or dermatologist's office.

One of the largest communities centered around extensive at-home aesthetic treatments is r/DIYAesthetics, with its nearly 84,000 weekly visitors.

Their widely shared “master list,” most recently updated in 2024 (I’ve removed all discount codes), details where to purchase injectables online. Of the 18 sources listed, at least 10 have been issued warning letters from the FDA.

For those outside of the U.S., this may not raise immediate concern. But for any consumers, purchasing misbranded or unapproved injectables from mystery, unverifiable sources carries real risks. These products may be contaminated, counterfeit, improperly stored, contain inconsistent amounts of an active ingredient, or entirely different ingredients than advertised.

Quick reminder, we’re talking about a substance you inject into your face.

What I found especially curious was that the majority of the moderators of these internet communities often receive financial kickbacks tied to these source websites. Some even have their own individual resale pages to dole out products themselves.

It’s a system of advantageous education and tips and tricks that push product recommendations that line their pockets while explicitly prohibiting outsider codes. Money for me, not for thee.

Reddit mods

A similar pattern appears in another subreddit, r/DIYHEAVEN, though on a smaller scale.

Here, the overlap between personal experimentation and product promotion becomes even more apparent. Moderators will near spam the forum with discount codes for the same products they then document using — effectively “double dipping” by directing readers to view the process and follow their results in real time on websites like Rumble that allow this content to be shared.

I’ve personally noticed a lot of praise for these off-brand, overseas products, but still, many never post results. Where’s the before and after?

In my research, there was a specific user in particular, who curated heavily edited images to suggest a significant transformation… all thanks to these injectable fillers and peptides.

But interestingly enough, the tagged videos, even the second or third part of their series on jaw filler, truly showed no difference.

If there’s clear bias, if these promoters even spend their time disputing claims in other subreddits (like, for example, r/IsItBullshit? where folks can ask if “programs, products or services are legitimate”) just for the sake of making themselves money…. who is the real villain here?

Certainly not the medspas. They may be pricy, and they may try to upsell additional take-home skincare, but any reputable facility is correctly administering the authentic product you paid for.

Too Much Confidence, Zero Credentials

But neurotoxins, fillers, and questionable fat-dissolving injections aside, we haven’t even gotten to the bad advice.

The really bad advice.

I didn’t have to dig too deep into any archives to find some examples; there are plenty from just the past two weeks.

This is a recent post on AmLactin (Ammonium Lactin/Lactate) cream, it’s an exfoliant, good for cell turnover/smoothing skin texture. There is a lower concentration (7%) available that contains Vitamin C, which is what the poster is referring to. The thing that struck me was that if your skin is burning, your skin barrier is damaged. If applying sunscreen is causing irritation of any kind, you need to chill out and give your skin a break.

Even the lower concentration option is not suitable for the person who responded and stated outright that they always have an issue with sunscreen being effective. OP, who gauges the efficacy of a product on whether or not it burns and itches, has now advised someone with sensitive skin to use an alpha-hydroxy acid that will cause UV sensitivity.

This post is speaking on TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peels. Two to three weeks is not a universal guarantee across the board.

With no professional training or knowledge, this individual is advising someone to use a melanin inhibitor and Vitamin A (retinoids) with no further commentary on the strength of the product, or when to stop these products before the peel (5 to 7 days minimum, I don’t care how tough you think your skin is).

Also worth noting, this guidance is specifically for those with darker complextions because they run a much higher risk of hyperpigmentation when applying peels to the body.

Lord, have mercy.

50% is incredibly high. As someone whose skin has been the guinea pig for many different treatments for years now, I stick to 15%, and I consider myself lucky if I can come close to finishing three passes.

This comment truly shows these members operate purely on guesswork, but have no issue putting others in harm's way with gross misinformation or encouraging escalation.

More layers do not mean higher strength. Two layers/passes of 10% are not going to equal one layer of 20%. This is a chemical that can burn your skin or permanently scar it. It’s not a math equation.

Stronger strength peels applied to parts of the body also run the risk of more complications, like uneven or prolonged healing, unpredictable results, toxicity, infection, and more. There’s also the fact that higher Fitzpatrick skin types should never use higher concentrations.

This important detail seems to be missing in these comments.

It’s okay, everyone, he read the brochures!

OP is a mod in r/DIYHEAVEN, and this comment was a reply to someone questioning their post, where they share their usage of three different products from three different brands (possibly countries?), and of course, close with a discount code.

Here’s the thing: Ingredient overlap does not guarantee compatibility. Same ingredients do not equal the same concentrations, same stability, or safe interaction. Specific formulas are designed to function as they are, not be mixed at home like a mad scientist.

Microneedling at 0.3mm, along with this concoction, is only aiding in increasing absorption.

I also stand by, “Hit dogs will holler.” If you want to introduce and endorse (which you do when you provide a handy affiliate code) a course of treatment, the burden of proof is on you.

Alright, perhaps enough Reddit today.

It’s completely understandable if dropping hundreds or thousands of dollars is simply not an option. I respect individual choice to do what you see fit with your own body.

But if your reason is simply that you don’t trust the system, consider what you’re choosing instead: Snake oil salesmen (and women) who are simply part of a different system. One that is not regulated and offers absolutely no protection.

I’m sure you’ve seen it.

Jim Carrey is making the news rounds this week after appearing at the César Awards in Paris. Afterwards, his presence was highlighted not for being an honored recipient of the prestigious award, but for some notable changes to his face.

Cue the harshly lit side-by-side comparisons, the clone conspiracies, and the debate on the causes.

My question is: What do we expect a 64-year-old man to look like?

More importantly, how do we expect people to respond to aging when every version of it is criticized?

Are we so conditioned by constant scrolling past filtered skin, perfectly curated lighting, and accessibility to treatments and surgeries that seeing a face change over time feels almost inconceivable? Could a star many of us grew up watching -gasp!- actually age with us?

While I have to suppress my glee that a man is at the center of this chatter for once, it does highlight the no-win situation we’ve created around aging.

Too much intervention, early intervention, or accepting the inevitable- somehow, each choice is deemed the incorrect one.

Filler: Rejuvenation or Ruin?

The reality is, we all age. Even celebrities. So, when Jim Carrey shows up looking less like he did even 10 years ago, it shouldn’t be a shock. The issue that often arises, though, is how people try to counter the signs of old age.

I’ve noticed over time that we’ve turned filler into the go-to solution. The moment a face starts to shift and sag, like a house settling, we rush to make repairs, urgently filling in lines and hollowing with injectable volume to replace what time has quietly taken.

Adding volume is easy. Sometimes a little too easy.

Restoring fat loss and filling in deeper lines, while maintaining the natural contour of your face, requires significant precision and a highly skilled professional with an understanding of facial anatomy and a filler’s composition.

Products will have differences in texture and density, making some appropriate for certain areas of the face. They’re very much not a one-size-fits-all solution that can be applied to any area lacking volume.

It’s also important to keep in mind when a temporary filler will hurt more than help, and other treatments should be pursued (more on that later…)

What causes distortion?

Ironically, filler isn’t what distorts the face. Poorly placed filler, lack of restraint, and repeated treatments can and will create this problem over time.

Aside from the much more serious risks that come along with any medical procedure, dermal fillers can cause some more common side effects like migration, hardening, and potentially worsen facial sagging (though that’s heavily debated).

There’s also the fun fact that filler doesn’t necessarily always break down on its own…

…it can remain in the body for as long as five years, with at least one case of detection after 10.

When filler is injected, there’s a healing response along that pathway. Each injection introduces minor internal scarring, and with frequent visits, that scar tissue can accumulate.

This can interfere with lymphatic drainage (aka causing fluid retention) and overall contribute to the overly-smoothed, puffy, “pillow face” effect that people instinctively react to.

Hasn’t this been the case with many celebrities? We notice and comment on their reasonably aging faces. They disappear and come back with plump, filled-in features, and then we mock the overcorrection.

So what, exactly, is the acceptable version of aging?

The answer will change from person to person, so it’s really a matter of knowing what your acceptable version is. Are you a Linda Hamilton, or are you deathly afraid of even looking your age?

If it’s the latter, you have options that won’t put you in the judgmental spotlight of public opinion like Mr. Carrey. As previously mentioned, there are other treatments besides filler if it doesn’t appeal to you or you worry about “pillow face.”

Skincare

There is no one miracle product, but consistently taking care of your skin, protecting yourself from the sun, and maintaining your barrier is always the foundation.

Biostimulators

Quickly gaining popularity, injectable biostimulators are an excellent option for those with a little patience and looking for a more gradual result. They work by triggering your body’s own natural collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin fiber production over the course of months.

Like traditional temporary fillers, they restore volume and smooth lines, but will also address some minor skin laxity.

You won’t walk out looking immediately refreshed, but changes unfold over three to six months, depending on your individual treatment plan.

Laser Treatments

Ablative lasers (including CO2 and Er:YAG) vaporize the top layers of the skin to reveal a new layer of healthy skin and stimulate the production of collagen. Healing and results can be quite significant. CO2 will provide the most dramatic “after”, greatly improving any texture, lines, or sun damage,

Non-ablative lasers use heat and/or light without destroying the top layers of the skin. These include Pulsed Dye and Nd:YAG. Results are more gradual, less dramatic, and healing is not as intense. Great for fine lines and milder wrinkles, along with sun spots.

Non-laser, simpler treatments worth considering include IPL and Red Light Therapy.

Aging is not a race to outrun lines or a contest of who looks the most untouched. It’s a natural part of human evolution. You can submit to it and bask in your natural beauty, or, just like Jim Carrey, take the steps to address the deflated hollowness that can occur as we age.

Just know that, regardless of whether you approach gracefully with a healthy skincare routine or turn to fillers, you’re going to draw the ire of others.

What is LED Therapy?

Cons?

There aren’t many specific drawbacks to this device. The main one I’d say applies to all red light therapy: it requires consistency. Results won’t happen overnight.

Additionally, the smaller surface area may be a downside for those wanting full-face or larger-area treatments in a single session. Since it’s designed for targeted use, you’ll need to move it around for broader coverage.

It’s also pricey for the size.

Did you know: Microneedling is one of the most misunderstood skincare treatments, and also one of the most universally helpful?

Today I’m clearing up all the myths, rumors, and misconceptions about this particular procedure and giving you only the facts on what microneedling really does, who it’s for, and what you can realistically expect from your results!

Before we get to that, though:

What exactly is Microneedling?

Using a handheld device, fine needles create multiple tiny injuries to the skin at once. (It sounds more painful than it is! )

This triggers a wound healing response from the body, amping up your collagen and elastin production.

Some things to keep in mind about microneedling:

• It doesn’t involve heat, making it an appropriate treatment for just about every skin type and tone.

• Numbing agent can absolutely be used!

• Downtime is minimal, usually lasting only a few days.

• It can be combined with radiofrequency or serums to enhance results.

MYTH: “DIY Microneedling will give you the same results as a professional!”

FACT:

There are critical techniques and sanitation practices that are followed to specifically prevent scarring and infection. Most dissatisfaction with microneedling isn’t from the treatment itself, but from improper execution, poor depth control, or inadequate aftercare.

Unless you’re ordering something from overseas with minimal oversight, you likely won’t be able to purchase a reputable device that is able to go beyond a certain depth.

This is due to the fact that any depth beyond .5mm is not safe for home use, or use by an unlicensed person who has not undergone extensive training. (No, a YouTube video does not count!)

MYTH: “The deeper you can go, the better your results will be.”

FACT:

This is probably where people most commonly go wrong — assuming that if they go deeper, the results will be transformative.

While I am amongst those who say “beauty is pain,” the fact is, the pain from the wrong depth applied to the wrong area will result in more redness, prolonged healing, and potential scarring.

I’ve seen comments stating there’s no point in seeing a solo esthetician for this service, because individual state laws determine our scope of practice and can restrict the depth we can achieve.

While that second part is true, where I’m licensed (Nevada, USA) restricts me to 1.5mm while working solo and not under the supervision of a physician.

As you can see in the chart above, that still allows me to treat most areas of the face and body.

Pro tip: I also would not advise going from 0 to 2/2.5mm if you have not previously treated that specific region or skin concern!

MYTH: “Brand matters big time! AND it determines if you’re receiving a legit treatment.”

FACT:

A common misconception I see. The fact is, some brands offer both at-home models and higher-end professional devices. The primary differences come down to depth capability and features.

For example, two of the more widely recognized brands both accommodate depths up to 2.5mm. Still, I’ve come across those misinformed comments saying things like, “If I don’t see SkinPen on the table, I leave the appointment.”

That’s certainly a personal preference, but there just isn’t a clinically significant difference that supports that level of concern.

It’s also important to note that FDA clearance is not a blanket approval for an entire brand. SkinPen received FDA clearance specifically for treating acne scars and neck wrinkles. Dr. Pen has a professional line, and its most recent release obtained FDA clearance for treating facial scars and improving skin texture. Clearance applies to specific indications, not to the brand name as a whole.

I completely understand expecting transparency. If a service is advertised as one thing and you receive something else, that’s a legitimate concern. But when the deciding factor is simply the brand name displayed on the device, it typically reflects marketing influence more than clinical superiority, or a difference in outcomes.

Bottomline: You’re paying a premium for name recognition.

Ultimately, results come down to appropriate depth, proper technique, and the provider’s skill… not the logo!

MYTH: “Microneedling is only for acne scars.”

FACT:

While Microneedling is a great option for acne scars, it can treat so much more…

• Hyperpigmentation, including melasma

• Soften wrinkles and fine lines

• Rough or uneven skin texture

• Minimize the appearance of enlarged pores

• Improve or fade stretch marks and surgical scars

Did you know: You can also treat hair loss?!

Microneedling the scalp stimulates dormant follicles, releases growth factors, and can turn those struggling little hairs into thick, terminal hairs. This has become an effective treatment for those with alopecia.

Combine with serums, platelet-rich plasma (derived from your own blood!), or topical Minoxidil for the best results.

MYTH: “Microneedling is a one-and-done treatment.”

FACT:

While you may notice improvement after a single treatment, most skin concerns require a series of 3 to 6 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart for optimal results.

The good news? Results can last several months, with maintenance treatments recommended twice yearly to preserve collagen stimulation and overall skin health.

Microneedling is far from a passing trend. It’s a results-driven treatment performed with precision and protocol in mind. Leave it to the professionals!

Don’t rush a true skin transformation. Patience paired with consistency will always reward you in the end.

I’ve been increasingly disappointed by how heavily sales-driven many aesthetic practices have become. In an industry built on trust, results, and forming long-term relationships, the focus has seemed to quietly shift away from providing valuable service and ensuring client retention toward aggressive upselling.

This shift feels a bit short-sighted, especially in today’s climate.

Clients have more options than ever before: medical spas, standalone estheticians, dermatology offices, plastic surgery centers, and DIY at-home treatments — all competing for the same consumer. Loyalty is no longer guaranteed. It’s earned through value, consistency, and transparency.

Yet many practices still operate as though clients are interchangeable and expendable. It has to be said: There’s a very real disconnect happening when sales are overshadowing service.

A Common but Flawed Retail Strategy

Recently, during an interview, I was told outright that one brand, a significantly less expensive line, was used exclusively in treatments, while another, far more expensive brand was carried for retail.

Let me be clear: An affordable product line does not mean low quality. The specific brand they carried for their backbar products performs very well. That’s not the issue at all.

The issue is a disconnect.

As a client, I’ve had treatments before where I fell in love with the product that was used, whether it felt great on my skin, glided on, wasn’t drying, or smelled amazing. When a product performs well, of course, you’re going to want to make it part of your routine. But if I inquire about this product and I’m told, “Actually, we don’t sell that, but instead, we have this…” and I’m guided to an entirely different, considerably more expensive brand that I have no experience with, I know that I wouldn’t be too pleased.

That’s a moment that quickly erodes trust between provider and client.

From the client’s perspective, the question becomes, “If the product used on me worked so well, why isn’t that recommended for my home care?”

When the answer is profit margins instead of client outcome, it’s felt.

Why This Hurts Both Clients and Providers

This approach doesn’t just undermine client confidence; it puts providers and estheticians in a difficult position. We’re asked to sell products we’re not using in the treatment.

Retail should ensure continuity.

Clients are far more likely to invest in products when they can experience them firsthand. Makes sense, right? If I leave a facial appointment feeling like a million bucks, I’m going to return to my esthetician (come on, even I have one), and I’m going to be excited to report back the results I’m already seeing.

When service and retail are misaligned, this only becomes a burden on staff.

Retention Is the True Revenue Source

In an oversaturated aesthetic market, retention matters so much more than conversion. A client who trusts their provider, understands their treatment plan, and feels genuinely cared for will return. That alone translates to more money spent over time. Again, because value is provided.

A client who feels “sold to” might convert once. They also might leave a review saying they felt their experience resembled a “bait and switch.”

Practices that prioritize short-term sales metrics over long-term relationships often mistake any activity for growth. But real growth comes from clients who don’t feel like transactions.

A Call for Balance

Ethical, effective aesthetics requires a delicate balance between treatment, retail, and the client’s personal goals. When what’s used in the treatment room matches what’s recommended for home care, trust deepens. When providers are empowered to educate rather than pressure, clients listen.

I assure you all: Sales aren’t going to disappear if you put service first. They’ll only become easier.

In an industry built on skin health, results, and confidence, your most powerful strategy will never be aggressive upselling. It’s integrity.

The skin barrier is your defense system against pollutants, bacteria, UV radiation, and hydration loss. A strong, functioning barrier is the key to maintaining healthy skin.

Signs of Damage:

• Sudden Skin Sensitivity

  Does your regular cleanser or serum feel tingly out of nowhere? Skin that suddenly becomes reactive to a product or the environment is a red flag. Watch out for random redness that appears on the nose and cheeks, or signs of rosacea.

• Change in Product Absorption

  Damage to your skin barrier often results in trans-epidermal water loss, aka water that evaporates right out from the skin and leaves the surface feeling a mix of dehydrated, tight, and oily at the same time.

  A hardened layer of tight and compact skin acts as a block, preventing skincare from sinking into those deeper layers. To overcompensate, more sebum is produced. This excess oil traps products on the surface and keeps water-based serums from properly penetrating.

Rough Skin Texture

How to Fix it Safely:

Pause all activities! No retinol, no exfoliation, no peels. Give your skin a break, not another challenge to overcome.

Keep it simple at first: Cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF.

Within one week, introduce a barrier-friendly routine, looking for these ingredients:

• Ceramides - lipids! Without them, the barrier cracks

• Niacinamide (low concentration) - calming, non-irritating

Which form is best?

A serum! This will give you the most direct treatment in the highest concentration.

Look for L-Ascorbic Acid, the most potent and pure form of Vitamin C. This type is readily absorbed by the skin and available in a 10 to 20% concentration. While that amount is most recommended for effectiveness, be sure to start on the lower end to build tolerance. This form is also the most unstable and will oxidize quickly, so look for an opaque or brown bottle and store it in a cool, dark place.

Ascorbyl Glucoside, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP): What do these three forms have in common? They’re all stable and water-soluble, making them absorb quickly on the surface layer. Once combined with the skin, they convert to pure Vitamin C. A lower concentration provides an option for sensitive skin. MAP and SAP each give the added benefit of acne-fighting properties and help with scarring and hyperpigmentation.

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Vitamin C Tetraisopalmitate, Ascorbyl Palmitate: All are oil-soluble, which penetrate deeper layers of the skin. They convert into active Vitamin C slowly, which results in a gentler, more widely tolerable formula. These would be the best choice for mature or dry skin, and anyone looking to focus more on treating elasticity and fine lines.

Are skin reactions a concern?

Vitamin C is powerful and not always gentle! It can cause mild tingling in the first week of use (which is normal), redness and irritation if the percentage is on the higher end, or increased sensitivity in reactive skin.

It’s not recommended to use with any exfoliating product. Think glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and AHA/BHA peels. Retinol is okay to continue using, as the two products are applied at different times of the day.

On the flip side: Pair with SPF for an ICONIC duo, or peptides, hyaluronic acid, or Vitamin E for a boost in antioxidants.

How to use it effectively:

To get the most benefits out of Vitamin C, apply a serum in the morning, ideally before your layer of SPF.

Your scar might tell a story, but that story might not be one you want to share. Whether it resulted from a past trauma, a surgery, or a cosmetic procedure, it’s perfectly valid to wish that the line left behind was a little less noticeable.

I’ve put together these proven treatments so you know what options you have to lighten, smooth, and soften any surgical scar at any stage… and I’ll throw in my two cents from my own experience in treating scars.

Silicone Scar Sheets

This is a simple, inexpensive option for new scars that are still raised and a surgeon-recommended first step in preventing them from worsening.

How does it work? The medical-grade silicone sheets create a breathable seal that keeps the tissue hydrated while signalling skin to produce collagen.

Pros: Easily available (can find them on Amazon). Reduces redness and itchiness, while flattening the scar.

Cons: Requires consistent use — a minimum of 8 to 12 weeks. Ineffective on older scars.

Microneedling

Works as the “reset button” for old scars, thick or uneven scars, and any texture irregularities. This is also a great option for acne scars!

How does it work? Controlled micro-injuries stimulate collagen production. Over time, with several sessions, the scar becomes smoother, softer, and starts to blend with the surrounding skin.

Pros: Works on most skin tones. Significant improvement in texture and scar depth. To enhance results, pair with growth factors (like Platelet-Rich Plasma, Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix, or Epidermal Growth Factors… just to name a few!)

Cons: Multiple sessions are necessary. This is not an ideal option if you’re prone to keloid scarring.

Lasers

You may have heard of Fractional (or Fraxel), Erbium, CO₂, PDL, or IPL, and wondered: How do they work, and which one is best for you?

Fractional is a method of treatment, not a laser. Any laser can be fractional. A fractional laser works by creating tiny micro-injury columns in the skin while leaving the surrounding skin untreated. While using this method, healing is faster, downtime post-treatment is shorter, and results will build gradually.

Fraxel is a brand name that produces fractional lasers. The two common types of Fraxel lasers are:

• Fraxel Restore, which is non-ablative (meaning it does not remove the top layer of skin), is good for texture and pigment. Expect a somewhat short downtime following treatment.

• Fraxel Repair, an ablative laser that removes tissue, effectively vaporizing the top layer of skin. This model uses CO₂ technology and treats the area more aggressively, resulting in longer downtime (expect at least 5 to 7 days).

CO₂/Carbon Dioxide Lasers are ablative. They remove the top layers of skin and deliver heat to the deeper layers to stimulate the production of collagen and new, healthy skin. The strongest and deepest resurfacing option, not recommended for darker skin tones.

Erbium (Er:YAG) is also ablative in that it resurfaces the skin, but it produces much less heat than CO₂, making it a “powerful but gentle” scar treatment option. The wavelength is very precise, with faster recovery and less risk of any unwanted pigment changes. This is an option for acne scars and any light scars.

Vascular Lasers, such as IPL (though, technically not a laser…) and PDL, emit light energy that is absorbed by your own hemoglobin. The energy heats blood cells, causing the walls to collapse and fade as the body reabsorbs them. In simple terms? It will target the redness in your scar. IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, uses a broad spectrum of wavelengths and can be used to treat a large surface area. PDL, Pulsed Dye Laser, uses a single focused wavelength for a more targeted treatment.

Pros: Lasers can give fast, dramatic results after one treatment. Age of the scar does not matter.

Cons: Depending on the intensity, plan for downtime, which can involve soreness, swelling, redness, bleeding, and sensitivity. They are not safe for all skin tones. High cost per session.

Steroid Injection

Best for raised, thick, hypertrophic, or keloid-type scars.

How does it work? A diluted steroid is injected directly into the scar to soften, flatten, and reduce redness. The medication breaks down collagen buildup, debulking the scar and reducing inflammation.

Pros: It can be a fast improvement in thickness and firmness. Eases symptoms like itching, tightness, and burning of the scar.

Cons: Can only be used to treat a specific type of scar. A side effect called atrophy can result in the widening of the scar/thinning of the skin after injection.

Radiofrequency Microneedling

Used to treat stubborn surgical scars that need tightening and smoothing.

How does it work? Much like with regular microneedling, the fine needles create micro-channels that allow RF energy to be delivered deep into the skin, heating tissue. By combining microneedling with heat, this stimulates collagen, elastin, and rebuilds the tissue to improve the appearance of scars.

Pros: Can treat deeper, older scars. More aggressive than traditional microneedling.

Cons: Higher cost per session. Numbing is NEEDED!

Paramedical Tattooing

For light colored scars, scars that lack pigment, or surgical scars that cannot fade any further, tattoo camouflage is an option. Gone are the days of reapplying makeup or getting those large, unwanted cover-up tattoos!

How does it work? A trained paramedical tattoo artist matches pigments to your skin tone. The colored scar is blended with the surrounding skin to effectively mask it.

Pros: Popular option for cosmetic scars. Long-lasting results. Can easily cover pale, flat, or white scars.

Cons: The Artist must be experienced. Not suitable for raised or red scars. Must be fully healed.

When is a revision necessary?

For scars that have stretched too wide, indented, or healed poorly, a surgeon can remove or reposition the scar.

The old scar is excised and a new technique is used to reclose the area with the goal of minimizing visibility and dramatically improving the scar’s appearance. In other words — you’ll still have a scar, but this is a “re-do” so that, when it heals, you’ll get more desirable results.

While this procedure can be invasive, many can be done in office, with local numbing.

While I take a pause in my electrolysis venture, I wanted to discuss a recent comment someone left on a Dermatologist's post, answering questions about hair removal methods…

“Generally speaking, if you are getting electrolysis or laser and the pain isn’t at the limit of what you can bear and drawing tears from you, then it’s a scam. It’s supposed to be excruciating.”

This is exactly why we can’t rely on strangers for medical and professional advice.

This comment is not only egregiously false, but it was stated as fact in response to someone genuinely seeking help. Now, not only may that person be turned off from ever pursuing permanent hair removal, but worse, they likely will repeat that anecdote of misinformation to others.

The truth is, pain is subjective, and everyone has their own tolerance level. However, electrolysis should never feel like excruciating pain during or after your session. Discomfort can happen, but unbearable pain is a sign that something is wrong.

To ensure you’re informed, let’s go over the factors that can contribute to discomfort during your appointment:

• The technique used. Galvanic (aka traditional electrolysis) is the most intense option, followed by Blend and Thermolysis. Which method is used will be determined by your hair type, skin sensitivity, and the area being treated.

• The depth of the hair follicle and whether or not it’s distorted.

  Note: Distortion is common and can occur due to previous laser treatments or repeated waxing.

• The area that is treated. Our skin is naturally thinner on our necks, inner thighs, genitals, etc. This is where we consider which method of electrolysis is appropriate to ensure as little discomfort as possible. The method can also be changed at any time during your appointment.

• Hormones can especially heighten sensitivity in areas like the jawline and upper lip.

• A practitioner who does not know what they’re doing. (I’ve shared my own experience with this.)

In class, while practicing on the different machines, I had my excruciating moment of pain. An instructor was working with me one-on-one and inserted a probe into my arm from an odd angle. This resulted in the follicle essentially being “blown out” from the side. I immediately yelped, and while I’ve previously worked with someone who had poor technique, this was an excellent (and necessary) example of what can happen when you do not correct an improper insertion.

Rest assured, when done correctly and when the appropriate mode is chosen, electrolysis can be pain-free.

Still worried? No problem. Follow these tips to best prepare for your appointment!

• Drink water. Hair follicles practically close up and will be difficult to access if you’re dehydrated. Your electrologist can also apply a safe, sensitive-skin moisturizer during your appointment.

• Caffeine and alcohol can intensify your sensitivity, so avoid them if possible.

• No chemical peels before your appointment. Discontinue retinol (it compromises the skin barrier and will result in increased sensitivity) for at least one week.

• Apply an OTC lidocaine approx. one hour before your appointment.

• Always speak up. If you need a break from the area being treated and want your provider to focus elsewhere, let them know. Depending on the area and your patience with results, the mode can also be switched to a less spicy option.

Aftercare:

• Cataphoresis (pictured above) is a life changer. It’s done post-treatment, calms the redness/heat, aids in closing pores, and promotes faster recovery. Nothing beats the feeling of those ice-cold rollers!

• Apply a scent-free moisturizer, aloe gel, or use GlyMed’s Fulvic Elixir, an antibacterial serum that calms irritation. Planning on being in the sun? SPF always.

• Keep all bacteria out! Change pillowcases, wash makeup brushes, don’t touch your skin, and avoid sweating or heat for 48 hours.

I love my clinical strength products, but I wanted to share my easy must haves for summer. These are items you can grab at Walmart or on Amazon, and they’re excellent to have on hand, especially if you get some pretty brutal heat like I do.

I’m not a partner of any of these brands. These are just products I recommend and enjoy.

1. Vaseline Radiant Hydrating Body Oil - truly melts into the skin and is an excellent hydrator after being in the sun! With jojoba and coconut oils, as well as Vitamin E, an antioxidant.

2. Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Stick SPF 50 - I’m a fan of anything that makes applying sunscreen easy. I think that’s what keeps most people from applying and reapplying, and having this in your purse or pocket leaves you no excuses! Water resistant, specifically formulated for sensitive skin, and also contains Vitamin E (another benefit of this super ingredient: it aids in the reduction of UV damage!)

3. Cetaphil Everyday Sunscreen Tinted Face Lotion SPF 40 - If I’m not using my IMAGE tinted sunscreen, I’m using Cetaphil’s. Funny enough, I picked up this sunscreen completely by accident, unaware that it was tinted, but fell in love! It is so smooth and creamy, it glides onto the skin like any moisturizer. It does not feel heavy at all, and stands up to some serious 100+ degree days.

4. Sun Bum Scalp & Hair Mist SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray - YES, you do have to protect your scalp, too! This product is perfect, without leaving your hair sticky or smelling too much like that tell-tale sunscreen scent. It’s light and water resistant.

5. Bio-Oil Skincare Oil - Marketed for scars and stretch marks, this mega hydrator also smooths, softens, and helps the appearance of aging skin. Personally, it was a Godsend post-surgery for scars, and just keeping my skin soft and moisturized in general. It lasts a very long time and has a pretty good shelf life (36 months), but it also comes in a mini size for those who want to save a few bucks and try it out.

After the recommended 9 weeks of feeling like a futuristic robot, I can finally report back with my findings on the Shark CryoGlow.

Religiously, every night I concluded my day with the Better Aging and Skin Sustain routines, throwing in the Skin Clearing treatment at least a few times weekly as needed. I followed this with my normal skincare routine for 64 treatments.

Was there an improvement?

Yes. I can comfortably say I noticed an overall improvement in evening my skin tone. I did not see any change whatsoever from using the Skin Clearing treatments. If I happened to have a breakout that week, I was extra diligent to make sure I used that setting. Unfortunately, I saw zero difference.

As far as fine lines go, though, my nasolabial lines (aka laugh lines) were noticeably less deep.

Likely similar to other LED light masks, there was a lot of light bleed from the openings and sides. While this isn’t a bother for the user, it may be a problem for anyone else in the room during treatment. It’s most notable during red light treatments, as the glow is very harsh.

The Shark CryoGlow currently has a price tag of $379.99, which is in line with many LED light masks available on the market today. If you need more help making your decision, here are more noteworthy considerations:

Pros:

+ Evens skin tone overall

+ Features separate treatment just for undereye cooling

+ Can set level of under-eye cooling 1-3

+ Remote control counts down treatment time and keeps track of number of treatments completed.

Cons:

+ Approximately 2 full cycles (all 3 treatments with cooling on max level) per charge

+ Very loud when cryo is going and takes a good 20-30 seconds to power down once that feature is shut off

+ Does not bend or mold to contours of the face like other masks do

+ Cannot be used while charging

There doesn’t seem to be a plan yet for additional body pieces/attachments, but I would expect an announcement soon as neck and chest masks are commonly paired with face masks.

I do think this is a worthy mask! I’m satisfied enough with my results to continue using it. I’ve even just used the cryo function before heading out and that’s really been excellent for depuffing.

The battery life is really the biggest drawback, but it’s far from a reason not to consider adding the CryoGlow to your nightly routine. It charges relatively fast with the included charger, so even if you forget to plug it in or it dies between treatments, you can be up and running again for at least one treatment within 30 minutes.

Pregnancy is no different. Here are some skin issues pregnant women face, what ingredients to look for to SAFELY treat them, and what to avoid.

Melasma

I'm sure you've heard of the glow of a pregnant woman's skin? Unfortunately, not all will be so lucky to experience beautiful, radiant skin during their time. Melasma, coined the "pregnancy mask," commonly develops as melanin production increases and dark patches appear on the face. This condition can last following the birth and can even be made worse if exposed to sunlight.

To combat this issue, wear mineral sunscreen every day, even when indoors. Look for products containing Vitamin C to brighten skin and Niacinamide for treating pigmentation.

Dry Skin

Changes to the skin's elasticity, a compromised skin barrier, and an increase in blood volume to support a growing baby all contribute to the skin feeling very dehydrated. The result? Itchy, dry, tight skin! This is going to be noticeable in the areas where the skin is stretching the most.

How to treat it: Gently exfoliate dry, dead skin cells once or twice weekly. Use thick creams and oils, especially containing cocoa butter, shea butter, or Vitamin E oil. Take oatmeal baths to soothe dry skin.

Note: If itching seems excessive, please see a doctor immediately as that can indicate more serious concerns that have nothing to do with the skin.

Acne

Increased hormonal fluctuations of androgens and progesterone lead to increased oil production. This clogs pores and leads to full on acne breakouts that can range from mild to severe, but typically clear up by the conclusion of the pregnancy.

To treat it, Azelaic Acid is gentle and well-tolerated to use while pregnant and experiencing breakouts. Niacinamide, which I previously mentioned for Melasma, is also great for inflammation.

Stretch Marks

The body is accommodating a new addition, and as a result, collagen and elastic fibers are breaking down under the stress of rapid stretching. The skin undergoes tiny tears in the supporting layers of tissue under the dermis — these become scars. Their appearance and the way they ultimately fade vary from person to person. It all depends on genetics, pre-pregnancy health, diet, age, and if any methods were used to “treat” them along the way.

What can help? Hydration! Cocoa butter, shea butter, and wear a mineral sunscreen when outside. Remember, post baby options include laser treatments and micro-needling if you’re unhappy with their appearance.

Ingredients to Avoid…

Retinoids/Retinol/Retin-A (ex. Tretinoin, Isotretinoin, Differin, etc.): Used for anti-aging and acne treatment. Can cause birth defects and be toxic for the liver due to excessive Vitamin A levels.

Hydroquinone: Aggressive skin lightening ingredient that can have an affect on fetal development.

Chemical Sunscreens: While generally safe, for pregnant women, Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are the "problem ingredients" that act as hormone disrupters.

ANY Chemical Peel Acids: Peels are not recommended during pregnancy due to heightened skin sensitivity and the risk of worsening hyperpigmentation.

Essential Oils: Many oils are added to skincare products (which is why you must be diligent in checking ingredients!). Certain scents are known to be uterine stimulants and should be avoided throughout pregnancy.

Just where are these injectables sourced from? (insert vague Korean website, peddling non-FDA approved substances…)

How did we become at-home experts on facial muscle anatomy? Watching YouTube, of course!

Pushing at-home micro-needling was dangerous enough. It’s a serious infection risk if not done correctly IN OFFICE and playing around with needle depths when you ultimately have no idea what you’re doing risks long-term scarring.

…But injectables? Have we collectively lost our minds for the sake of saving money on a service that no one said you need to seek out in the first place?

Personally, it’s an excellent how-to guide if your end goal is a hospital stay with a MRSA diagnosis.

In addition to unsterile conditions (NO, your bathroom is not a clinical environment), and questionable sources that could easily contain counterfeit or expired products, you lack the medical expertise to handle adverse reactions. To even recognize those reactions.

Fortunately, there are many options to get you smooth, ranging from at home to professional treatments. Choosing the right one depends on factors like your personal preference, skin sensitivity, budget, and time.

I'll explore the different methods available today, how well they work, and the pros and cons of each!

1. Waxing

Warm wax is applied directly to the skin, sometimes followed by a paper strip (quick note: when using hard wax, strips aren’t used), then quickly removed. It rips out hair at the follicle and results can last 3+ weeks.

A relatively quick and convenient process. Any area of the face or body can be waxed.

Pros:

• Privacy: can be done at home.

• Inexpensive whether DIY or at a salon.

• Added benefit of removal of dead skin cells.

• After prolonged treatments, hair will start to grow in finer.

Cons:

• Pain. If unexperienced, skin can lift along with the hair.

• Requires regular treatments, every 3-4 weeks.

• Can cause sagging of skin over time.

• Wax cannot be applied to compromised skin, such as if you have rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, sunburn, or acne. Also, not an option for anyone who has an auto-immune disorder or is currently taking blood thinners.

2. Epilators

Okay, up close, that’s a bit intimidating…

Epilators are electronic, handheld devices that act as tiny rotating discs or tweezers to pull multiple hairs out at once. It is similar to waxing where hair is pulled out at the root, but in smaller sections.

Pros:

• Privacy: can be done at home.

• Results can last for a few weeks.

• Affordable: cost for a device starts at approx. $30.

Cons:

• It’s about as painful as it sounds.

• Skin may be temporarily inflamed after treatment.

• Will not exfoliate the skin like waxing does.

3. Threading

Using centuries-old techniques, cotton or polyester thread is twisted and wound, then rolled over areas to target. Rows of unwanted hair are removed at a time, right at the follicle.

This method is precise enough for eyebrow shaping, making it an ideal option if that is what you’re seeking.

Pros:

• Minimal irritation, great for those with sensitive skin.

• Will not cause ingrown hairs.

• Results last 3-6 weeks, depending on your hair growth cycle.

Cons:

• Intended for facial hair, but can be performed on legs with patience.

• Can be unsanitary if practitioner works by holding thread in their mouth (this is surprisingly common).

4. Depilatory Creams

You've probably heard of Nair, a popular brand amongst many currently on the market. The active ingredient in depilatory creams, Thioglycolic Acid, weakens the keratin protein of each hair so it essentially dissolves at the surface.

You simply apply the cream, wait anywhere between 3-10 minutes, and then remove with a damp towel. I recommend following with a shower using an unscented soap over the treated areas to avoid irritation.

Pros:

• Privacy: can be done at home.

• Pain free.

• Affordable, with basic options ranging $5-10.

• Sensitive skin formulas allow you to use this cream on face and bikini area.

• Results are immediate and will last slightly longer than shaving.

Cons:

• The smell is absolutely awful. Universally.

• Improper use and leaving it on too long will result in chemical burns.

• Cannot be applied to compromised skin, suck as if you have rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, sunburn, or acne. Also not an option for anyone currently using retinol products.

4. Laser Hair Removal

In LHR, the laser emits a single wavelength of light to precisely target pigment in the hair, effectively damaging those hair follicles with heat. Contrast is a must, as the laser will not recognize light hair, or dark hair against darker skin tones. If you're an ideal candidate, you can expect 90% reduction in hair growth once a course of treatment is completed.

All areas of the body can be treated over a period of time, but ongoing maintenance appointments will be necessary. Buyer beware: a hormonal event (pregnancy, birth control, PCOS, menopause, etc.) can trigger regrowth with a vengeance.

Pros:

• Long term hair growth reduction.

• Affordable packages typically offered at reputable med spas.

Cons:

• Requires typically a minimum of 6 in-office sessions, on a specific schedule.

• Pain is described as a rubber band repeatedly snapping over the skin.

• Occasionally marketed as a permanent solution: it’s not.

• Not every hair or skin color can be treated, nor can any areas with tattoos.

5. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

IPL is similar to laser in that it also emits wavelengths, however it is diffused over a larger area. I've talked before about how this is the least effective option for in office hair removal — mind you, in office is where you would receive the most powerful treatment. The at home devices will not deliver long-lasting results (no matter what that person on TikTok promises…)

IPL is much better used as its intended, in office, to treat skin tone and texture issues.

Pros:

• Privacy: can be done at home.

Cons:

• Pricy: devices range from $150-400

• Pain level similar to Laser Hair Removal.

• Ongoing treatments that require you to stick to a schedule.

• Hair guaranteed to grow back.

6. Electrolysis

Not gonna lie — it’s the holy grail of hair removal.

Using short-wave thermolysis (heat), galvanic (heat and chemical), or a mix of both, electrolysis works by inserting a thin needle directly into the hair follicle. An electric current kills the follicle and the root, making regrowth impossible.

This is the only option that destroys (not just damages!) the hair follicle, which is why legally, it can advertise as permanent hair removal.

Pros:

• The holy grail of hair removal.

• Results are permanent.

• Can treat any skin color, hair color, and can even be done over tattoos.

• Ideal for those who suffer from PCOS.

Cons:

• Treats one. hair. at. a. time.

• Requires multiple treatments. Depending on the area, can easily take years before completed.

• Pain is about a 3/10, but can be much worse depending on the provider, method, and aftercare.

• Pricey. A one hour session typically averages $100.

When it comes to hair removal, there’s truly an option out there for everyone. There’s also nothing that says you can’t try and see what works out best for you!
